Lunchline: Get your tags in order, D.C.

Last night was a fantastic night of soccer, but not particularly because of the U.S. Men’s National Team. They lost again, this time to Ecuador. in the real tilt of the night, Brazil beat Mexico with 10 men. Now that was quite the match.

If you’re riding around the District with expired tags, you might want to stop. Apparently, in D.C., police have the authority to arrest you if your vehicle tags have been expired for more than 30 days. and yes, it has most certainly happened to seemingly otherwise law-abiding citizens who have had their lives disrupted by this punitive policy. AAA says that Washington might be the only place in the country where this happens. The Post’s Ashley Halsey III reports.

Mayor Adrian Fenty unveiled a new street sign at 17th and R Streets NW dedicated to honor gay rights activist Frank Kameny. from left to right, Frank Kameny, Mayor Fenty and Jack Evans from Ward 2 smile as they present a copy of the sign that was given to Kameny. (Photo by Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post) (Sarah L. Voisin – WASHINGTON POST) A legendary man passed away yesterday. Frank Kameny, one of the foremost gay rights activists not just in the city, but around the country, was found dead Tuesday. He was 86. His life story as a closeted gay man in the military, and later a victim of homophobia in the workplace is fascinating. some of his old protest materials are even in the Smithsonian. The Post’s Martin Weil and Emily Langer remember the man who died on National Coming Out Day.

I remember my days in college radio. It was a fun new world, where the possibilities of online streaming allowed for endless listenership across the country. Of course, nobody really listened, but it was exciting. Yesterday was national College Radio Day, and student-run radio stations around the nation took to the air to reassert their presence. The Post’s Daniel de Vise reports on how economics have changed the face of college radio, often at students’ expense.

My friend Thomas grew up in Fairfax County and had one of the most tremendous treehouses I’ve ever seen. I have no idea if his dad went through the struggles that mark W. Grapin did to get it up, but I would certainly hope not. when Grapin decided to build his kids a 58-square foot clubhouse in his yard, he ran afoul of the zoning board. The Post’s Freddy Kunkle reports on the Army National Guard soldier who found himself out a couple thousand dollars over legal red tape.

It’s officially crunch time for D.C. United. The team is making a push toward the MLS playoffs and is going to need all the points it can get before the regular season ends to qualify. Tonight is the team’s last road game of the season and they’re playing it at the most distant location possible in the league. The Black and Red travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps, likely without their star Dwayne DeRosario. The Post’s Steven Goff previews the match.

Extra Bites

• Here’s a tech update for you. The iPhone 4S has been out for a bit now, and the reviews are in. For the most part, people really like it. It might not look different, but it does run better. Also, BlackBerry outages are being reported across the globe.

• A woman named Ashley Miller ran the Chicago Marathon, then ate a sandwich, then went to the hospital and had a baby. That is awesome.

• Sony bought the rights to the Steve Jobs movie. Who do we think should play him on film?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS NEW: Daughter says her father “basically dared me” to post the videoNEW: The judge’s ex-wife says she lived in “an environment of dysfunction”The judge admits he is the man seen on the videoThe judge will be temporarily relieved of his duties for two weeks

Tune in to “AC360º” tonight at 8 ET for Anderson’s interview with Hillary Adams.

Dallas (CNN) — a woman who launched a firestorm by posting a 2004 video of her father, a Texas judge, beating her on the Internet said Thursday that violence was a regular occurrence in her family home.

“It did happen regularly, for a period of time, and I could tell, because of the pattern, that things were escalating again,” Hillary Adams, now 23, said on NBC’s “Today.” she said she left her video camera on her dresser recording and covered its light with a scarf in order to capture the video.

Her father, Aransas County, Texas, Court-At-Law Judge William Adams, faces a police investigation and a judicial probe after the graphic video surfaced of him striking his then-16-year-old daughter repeatedly while cursing at her and berating her.

On Wednesday afternoon, William Adams was temporarily relieved of his duties for the next two weeks, and a visiting judge will take over his caseload while the matter is being investigated, according to the office of Aransas County Administrative Judge Burt Mills.

No court dates were scheduled this week, Mills’ office said.

In an interview with KZTV outside his Rockport, Texas, home Wednesday, Adams confirmed to a reporter that he was the man beating his daughter with a belt and a board on the video.

“She’s mad because I’ve ordered her to bring the car back, in a nutshell, but yeah, that’s me. I lost my temper,” Adams told the station. “Her mother was there, she wasn’t hurt … it was a long time ago … I really don’t want to get into this right now because as you can see my life’s been made very difficult over this child.”

Adams continued: “In my mind I have not done anything wrong other than discipline my child when she was caught stealing. I did lose my temper, I’ve apologized. It looks worse than it is.”

Hillary Adams told television station KRIS on Wednesday her father was “making light of the situation.”

“I just can’t believe he would say something like he doesn’t think it’s a big deal.”

Adams appeared on “Today” with her mother, Hallie Adams. although the older woman participated in the videotaped beating, Hillary Adams said she has since left the marriage because of the abuse and has apologized.

“We’re very close now,” she said when asked if she was angry at her mother. “When I showed her the video, she started crying, hasn’t stopped apologizing, and I forgive her because she knows everything that happened.”

Hallie Adams, asked how she could condone or participate in the incident, acknowledged, “It’s chilling,” but said. “My answer to you and to the world is something that I’ve been hiding for a very long time. It’s a family secret, and that’s addiction” on her husband’s part.

She did not elaborate, but said, “I lived in an environment of dysfunction and it steadily got worse.” she said she left her husband when Hillary Adams was 6 months old and “he shamed me into going back.”

“I was completely brainwashed and controlled,” Hallie Adams said. “I did every single thing he did.”

Hillary Adams said on “Today” she waited seven years to release the video because at the time it was shot, she was still a minor and living under her father’s roof. she didn’t know what might happen to herself, her mother or her younger sister, she said.

The 2004 beating occurred when her father was punishing her for using the Internet “to acquire music and games that were unavailable for legal purchase at the time,” Hillary Adams wrote on the Internet posting. she said she released the video after being harassed by her father.

“It was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” she said Thursday. “It wasn’t any huge happening or anything.” she said she told her father she had the video, “and he didn’t seem to think anything of it, and basically dared me to post it.”

The video posting said, “Judge William Adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can’t even exercise fit judgment as a parent himself. Do not allow this man to ever be re-elected again. his ‘judgment’ is a giant farce. Signed, Hillary Adams, his daughter.”

Receiving an outpouring of support after posting the video has been like a form of therapy, she told KRIS, which is based in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“People are believing us now, instead of calling us liars like they have in the past,” she said.

The video is punctuated by cracks of the man’s belt and the girl’s screams and cries.

At one point, the man says to his near-hysterical daughter, “What happened to you, Hillary? once you were an obedient, nice little girl. now you lie, cheat and steal.”

At another point in the 7 1/2-minute video, he yells at her, “You want to put some more computer games on? You want some more?”

“Are you happy?” he asks her. “Disobeying your parents? You don’t deserve to f—ing be in this house.”

He also berates the girl’s mother for allowing a “f—ing computer” in the house.

The older woman also strikes the girl with a belt once, and near the end of the video instructs the girl not to “touch one other thing on the computer besides your schoolwork until you are given notice otherwise.”

Hillary Adams “has had ataxic cerebral palsy from birth that led her to a passion for technology, which was strictly forbidden by her father’s backwards views,” according to the posting on the YouTube video.

Aransas County Attorney Richard Bianchi said his office has been overwhelmed with calls and e-mails, including some from overseas, since the video went viral on the Internet.

“Just a sad day. It’s unfortunate for all the people in that video. It doesn’t bode well for the image of our community or our judiciary or our legal community in Aransas County,” Bianchi said.

William Adams is up for re-election in three years, Mills told CNN. he was elected to a four-year term last year, said Aransas County Clerk Peggy Friebele

CNN tried repeatedly on Wednesday to reach William Adams at his Rockport, Texas, office, but received a constant busy signal.

But Adams told KRIS that the conduct is “not as bad as it looks on tape.” The judge said he had contacted judicial review officials in Austin and “more will come out” in the investigation, KRIS reported.

Asked what he might mean, Hallie Adams said on “Today,” “I think that the story that’s going to come out … in his mind is that he’s projected his problem onto me. for the entire four years since I’ve left the marriage, I’ve been abused and harassed through texts, e-mail.” she said she told William Adams in June that she would not speak to him again, and “he has threatened to file for modification and take my younger daughter away from me.”

Watch the complete video on YouTube

A Facebook posting on Wednesday attributed to Hallie Adams states: “I am praying for my daughters and me and my family to heal in all ways from emotional and physical abuse, for the current and continuing abuse of my children and me that has been ongoing to end — starting now — for my daughters to both finally be able to go to counseling both individually and as a family group with their dad’s approval, encouragement, involvement and support, for him to finally make amends to all of us, talk openly with us, and take the first steps to letting our broken family heal.”

A page called “Don’t Re-Elect Judge William Adams” also sprang up on Facebook, attracting more than 19,800 “likes” by Thursday morning. Messages were posted by users in countries including Australia, the Netherlands and Guatemala, among others, and a Spanish-language version of the video was posted on YouTube.

“This man doesn’t deserve power,” said a posting on the Facebook page. “He doesn’t know how to use it.”

Asked whether she wants her father to lose his job, Hillary Adams said on “Today,” “I think wishing anybody to lose their job is not a really good thing to do,” but “his being fit for the job, that’s something I really can’t say that he is.”

She said she believes her father has been punished enough by the video being made public, “and I just think he really needs help and rehabilitation. We need to get him counseling or something.”

Asked if she regretted posting it, she said, “I regret that some of my friends and some people close to me have kind of had trouble with this, and of course I regret that it’s my own father. I’m having very mixed feelings about that, but at the same time so many people are telling me I did the right thing.”

A person identifying herself as Hillary Adams, on a Twitter account using the same username as the video posting, tweeted to CNN on Wednesday, “I’m not sure how much I should say, except that above all we need to help my father instead of condemning him.”

The video was brought to authorities’ attention about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Rockport Police Chief Tim Jayroe told CNN, and authorities are investigating to determine its authenticity.

Aransas County District Attorney Patrick Flanigan told CNN authorities are looking at numerous factors, including the child’s age and the statute of limitations.

The law is complex on which charges could be brought, he said, and which statutes may apply — which is all speculation until the video is confirmed to be authentic.

“We’re in a fact-finding situation now to determine what is true,” he said. his office will look at how the law has changed in the past couple of years, as there could have been different laws in effect at the time.

The possibility of an alleged abuser holding a position of authority such as a judge “doesn’t matter and shouldn’t matter” in the investigation, District Attorney Flanigan said, adding, “it will be a normal review.”

As a judge, Adams handles misdemeanor cases, including family-related and juvenile court issues, Flanigan said. Those cases rarely move to the criminal side or cross to his purview, he said.

“We want to get to the bottom of it … regardless of who the person is,” he said.

The Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct declined comment on the matter Wednesday, but it said it was aware of the situation. a woman answering the phone said the commission has been “overwhelmed.”

Police and the district attorney are taking the investigation seriously, Jayroe, the police chief, said. Investigators had not spoken with members of the Adams family as of Wednesday, he said.

Jayroe said his department has asked the Texas Department of Public Safety for assistance with an investigator. “It’s the first time in 22 years we’ve asked for assistance,” he said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cale Yarborough hates the Chase. as much as the Hall of Famer admits it maintains suspense until the final race or two, NASCAR’s first driver to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated said he believes the Sprint Cup championship should be based on the entire season.

“Thank goodness it wasn’t this format back then,” Yarborough said recently, pondering whether he could have been successful in the 10-race playoff in the mid-70s, when he won three straight titles. “I don’t know what I would have done. I still probably would have tried to win every race.

“It’s hard for me not to say that Kyle Busch reminds me a little bit of me in my days. He’s capable of trying to put a full-size car through a half-size hole, and I was guilty of that, too.”

What this son of a South Carolina tobacco farmer was trying to say with his comparison to Busch is that it’s hard to win championships under the current format when drivers are willing to take risks that turn good days into bad ones all for the chance to finish one spot higher or win.

What he’s saying is you have to develop patience.

Let go of some of that stubbornness that he was so famous for.

Yarborough finally did. Busch is close to that point, too.

Maybe closer than anybody is willing to admit.

Busch is fourth in points, only 18 behind leader Carl Edwards heading into Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. it is the first time in five Chase appearances that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has been in championship contention with five races to go.

It is the first time Busch even has been close to being in contention. he has done so by avoiding the catastrophic days that have haunted him in the past, that made his average finish in the first five races of his first four Chases a whopping 19.4.

He has cut that almost in half to 10.4, and were it not for a fuel-mileage issue in this season’s Chase opener at Chicago, where Busch finished 22nd, and handling issues late at Dover (sixth) and Kansas (11th), he would be right there.

The key, though, is he has survived and kept his head in the game. what he hasn’t done, as JGR president J.D. Gibbs said, is lose his cool and put the car in the wall as he has been prone to do when things go bad.

Yarborough said he has seen improvement, too.

“I’ve seen him do a little better with those things lately, too,” he said.

This isn’t about Busch maturing as a person, which has been debated far too much. This is about him maturing as a driver.

while some want to say Busch is running out of time to win is first Cup title, he’s really way ahead of the game. Yarborough was 37 when he won the first of his three consecutive titles, a feat that wasn’t duplicated until Jimmie Johnson came along with his first of five straight at age 31.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

A look at the age of drivers when they won their first Sprint Cup championship since the modern era of NASCAR began in 1972 (from oldest to youngest):

Driver1st titleAgeBobby Allison198346Dale Jarrett199943Alan Kulwicki199238Cale Yarborough197637Bobby Labonte200036Darrell Waltrip198134Bill Elliott198833Rusty Wallace198933Benny Parsons197332Tony Stewart200231Matt Kenseth200331Jimmie Johnson200631Dale Earnhardt198029Terry Labonte198428Kurt Busch200426Jeff Gordon199524Average age 33.25

Only Jeff Gordon (24) , Kurt Busch (26), Terry Labonte (28) and Dale Earnhardt (29) in NASCAR’s modern era, which began in 1972, have won the title before turning 30. The average age of the 16 drivers who won their first title in the modern era is 33.25.

Bobby Allison, who is tied with Darrell Waltrip for fourth on NASCAR’s all-time wins list with 84, was 46 years old.

Hall of Fame owner/driver Junior Johnson used to tell Waltrip that he didn’t want a driver until he was in his late 20s and early 30s.

“Somewhere in that window is where you’re at your best,” Waltrip said. “You now have the experience. You’ve succeeded. You’ve failed. You’ve won. You’ve lost. You’ve gotten yourself in every situation you can get into.

“And now you can capitalize on that experience in that small window of time.”

Busch is in position for the first time to capitalize on experience from his past failures.

Sometimes we forget that Busch is only 26. We think that because he has a record 51 victories and a title in the Nationwide Series, that because he has 104 victories between NASCAR’s top three series, he should have two or three Cup titles by now.

But in Cup years, Busch is just a babe, particularly when you consider the three drivers ahead of him in the standings have an average age of 35.3.

Did you know that Yarborough had 40 Cup wins before he held the championship trophy above his head for the first time in 1976? Or that Waltrip had 39 wins before he collected the first of his three titles in 1981?

Or that Allison won 80 of his 84 races before he wore the crown in 1983?

Busch has just 23 Cup wins.

“I definitely think there is an experience factor,” Gordon said of winning titles. “With Kyle, I don’t know if it’s so much age. He’s tremendously talented, but he’s kind of an all-or-nothing guy. He’s very aggressive, which puts on one heck of a show and wins a lot of races as we’ve all seen, but …”

There always seems to be a “but” with Busch.

“When it comes to winning championships you’ve got to manage the highs and lows,” Gordon continued. “You’ve got to be consistent over a lot of different tracks over 10 weeks. that has its challenges for [Busch's] type of driving style.”

But Busch is adapting. he could have pushed it too hard when Matt Kenseth began battling him for the lead with just over 25 laps remaining in Saturday night’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. he could have become frustrated and lost it after leading a race-high 111 laps.

He didn’t. he realized Kenseth had the better car and the win wasn’t meant to be.

He wasn’t happy about it, but he understood the big picture.

Championships are about understanding the big picture.

“The frustration is, again, we did not finish where we wanted to, which could have been a real win, a real highlight,” Busch said after finishing second. “The next frustration is we have yet to win a Chase race, and I’m sure I’ll be hearing about that for the next four years if I continue that.”

Yes, there was a bit of sarcasm there.

“But, you know, we’ll keep working on it and go into Talladega and see if we can’t get one there,” Busch said.

There was patience there.

What has to make those ahead of Busch nervous is that they know he’s capable of rattling off two or three straight wins at any moment. They know that at some point the excellence that enabled him to enter the Chase first this year and in 2008 will transfer into the final 10 races.

“We have to keep finishing like this,” Busch said Saturday. “It’s all it takes. It’s not that hard. I’ll take it, and if we can finish second from here on out, then we might win this deal.”

Busch never has been able to say that and mean it, know it, this deep in the Chase. that may be the confidence boost that gets who Waltrip calls “the best pure driver out there” over the hump.

Perhaps he is where Johnson was in 2006, when he rallied from 146 points out with five races remaining to win his first title.

If you remember, Johnson finished second at Charlotte to make up only minimal ground, just as Busch made up only two points with Saturday’s second-place run. Johnson followed that with a win and three seconds to go into the finale with the lead.

Busch is capable of doing the same thing.

Waltrip told Busch during a long conversation last week that “it’s not your time.” that was before Johnson crashed with 18 laps remaining to fall 35 points down and seemingly out of the picture, although you never can count him out.

Perhaps it is Busch’s time.

“He’s a young man,” Waltrip said. “No reason to panic for him. He’ll get himself in a championship situation.”

And if he truly has a little bit of Yarborough in him, he’ll capitalize one day.

UTEP football notebook: CSU-UTEP play lights out

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Late in the halftime during Saturday night’s game, the lights at the Sun Bowl went out (a blown circuit was blamed) and created a 25-minute delay.

At first it seemed like it might be part of the halftime show and the crowd celebrated by flipping open their cell phones and waving them back and forth like it was a rock concert. Teams were leaving the locker room for the second half when it happened.

“That was really cool,” UTEP coach Mike Price said. “It was awesome. I thought, ‘Andre (Faegin), the band director, does it all.”

Special impact

UTEP’s superlative special teams finally gave up some big plays the wrong way. the kickoff and punt cover teams, which had been among the best in the nation, allowed Colorado State to average 34 yards per return and 19.5 yards per punt return.

Worst of all, after UTEP’s lead was cut to 31-17 with 7:29 left, Vernon Frazier fielded the ensuing kickoff on his 4-yard line and took a knee. Frazier said he was told to take a knee, even though no one was within 15 yards of him.

“I didn’t want to be a hero, I was just listening to coach,” he said.

Kick challenge

The battle of two of the best punters in the nation was as good as advertised.

Ian Campbell averaged 54.7 yards on three punts for UTEP while Pete Kontodiakos averaged 51.4 yards on five punts.

Penalized

UTEP had been a disciplined team all year, averaging just 38.5 penalty yards per game, but they imploded in that regards Saturday with seven penalties for 89 yards and some could have been killers.

The most notable was a facemask away from the ball on DeShawn Grayson after a third-and-goal pass from the 4 went incomplete. That gave the Rams a first-and-goal from the 2, but aided by a motion penalty, UTEP made a stand. on third-and-goal from the 4, Grayson broke up a pass.

The Miners had a drive killed by a personal foul on Jerel Watkins for an illegal block and Nathan Jeffery was called for a celebration penalty after a touchdown.

In the second half, a Blake celebration penalty extended a Ram drive after a third-and-long sack, and Watkins was called for a late hit as Nick Lamaison crossed the goal line on his touchdown run. That touchdown did stand, but set up Colorado State with good field position when it was enforced on the ensuing kickoff.

“There was some uncharacteristic things we did during the game,” Price said.

Local plays

A play after Montwood’s Julio Lopez caught a pass, Chapin’s Cliff Tucker made his first career reception in the third quarter. It went for 10 yards.

South Florida Classical Review » Blog Archive » Miami Symphony opens season with Beatles-inspired premiere

The Miami Symphony Orchestra opened its season Sunday with the world premiere of Sam Hyken’s Beatles Guide to the Orchestra. Hyken, currently involved in the Miami Music Project Orchestral Academy, is the orchestra’s principal trumpet player and has a definite interest in the merging of disparate styles of music. The Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall provided the showcase for his skillful symphonic arrangement of several Beatles’ tunes into a narrated orchestral guide clearly modeled on that of Benjamin Britten.

The Beatles Guide is an eclectic piece in popular style, with elements of jazz. Opening with what sounded like Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ, Superstar, it quickly segued into Octopus’s Garden and took off from there.   The orchestration and arrangement were skillful and, if Britten got to the finish first, this imitation as the sincerest form of flattery even went so far as to include a fugue during the closing pages, as did Britten. The audience gave a standing ovation to Hyken and embraced this entertaining music with great enthusiasm. it would be surprising if the music does not emerge as a pop concert favorite. The orchestra, under Eduardo Marturet played with style and spirit.

Two popular warhorses completed the program. Tchaikovsky’s familiar Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor can sometimes seem a chore to sit through if routinely performed. from the opening bracing statement of the horns it was clear that both conductor and players aspired to something more.

Stewart Goodyear/ Photo: Andrew Garn

Pianist Stewart Goodyear, a student of Oxana Yablonskaya, Leon Fleisher, Gary Graffman and Claude Frank, entered with muscular authority, and a determination to banish all thought of the ordinary. this he achieved by using his varied tone and fleet fingerwork to bring a new freshness to this jaded masterwork. Marturet gave his timpani player an unusual amount of sonic freedom, and the resultant strength of the music was underlined.

Goodyear played the Andantino with beautifully rapt expression, and the breakaway Prestissimo took off like lightening. a few clashes of tempo between orchestra and piano, here and in the final movement, almost threatened to disrupt things, but recovery was quick, with perfection sacrificed to the excitement of the moment. even with a cacophony of audience coughs and sneezes, what came through was a performance as fresh, vigorous, and thrilling as any to be heard.

Quickly re-entering from the wings, Marturet hopped onto the podium and immediately began the famous “fate” motif of Beethoven’s fifth Symphony. this was to be a no-nonsense performance, expressive of all the anger and frustration felt by the composer over his increasing deafness. Tempos were quick, all repeats taken, and the rousing horns sounding forth as if life depended on their sheer raw, bold power.  With the conductor refusing to rein in the timpani, the music took on a new, and more forceful dimension of power and excitement. by the time the trombones entered for the final Allegro, the performance had grown into quite an achievement for the Miami Symphony Orchestra, with only the reticent piccolo buried during the jubilant final moments.

Apparently, there’s a cute little cat fight brewing between the football coaches at North Carolina and North Carolina State — over academics.

The back story: during a radio appearance Wednesday ahead of their annual rivalry game with NCSU, UNC interim coach Everett Withers questioned “the academic environment” at the Raleigh school, and said recruits in the area “need to know the flagship school in this state.”

“they need to know it academically,” Withers said during the radio spot. “if you look at our graduation rates, as opposed to our opponent’s this week, graduation rates for athletics, for football, you’ll see a difference. … if you look at the educational environment here, I think you’ll see a difference.”

Conveniently, Withers failed to mention that, of the two schools, only his has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions recently to answer questions regarding, among other things, academic fraud in the football program.  That point didn’t go unnoticed by Withers’ NCSU counterpart, who lit into the coach’s remarks when asked about them Thursday, bringing up not only the academic fraud angle of the NCAA issues but also the one-time presence of John Blake on the coaching staff — alleged to be on the take from a now-deceased NFL agent — as well as multiple players receiving impermissible benefits.

“here is a guy that’s on a football staff that ends up in Indianapolis,” O’Brien said at his regularly scheduled post-practice media availability. “. . .if you take three things that you can’t do in college football, you have an agent on your staff. You’re paying your players. And you have academic fraud. That’s a triple play as far as the NCAA goes. So I don’t know that he has anything to talk about or they have anything to talk about. if that’s what people want in their flagship university in North Carolina, then so be it.”

He was asked what he meant by “paying your players.” He indicated that he was referring to the impermissible benefits players received.

“They had players accepting money from somebody,” O’Brien said. “I mean, money is being given from someone to somebody, that’s been documented, right? I don’t know how it got there. Maybe I’m wrong saying that. but those are no-nos as far as the NCAA goes.”

You’ll have to forgive any cattiness being displayed by the respective coaches theses days.  Withers is the head coach of the Tar Heels on an interim basis and will likely be replaced following the season with a permanent coach following a national search.  O’Brien’s hold on the Wolfpack job is a tenuous one, rumored to be on the coaching hot seat in the midst of a 4-4 season and with just one winning record in his first four years at the school.

And, as far as what the two are squabbling over?  The Charlotte Observer notes that, “[a]ccording to data provided by the NCAA, North Carolina’s football team had a graduation success rate of 75 percent for the freshman class of 2004, compared to 56 percent for N.C. State.”

The graduation success rate in 1-A (FBS) football for entering class of 2004 is 69 percent.

Death metal band GWAR bringing lots of blood and guts to Chicago

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

By THOMAS CONNER Pop Music Critic tconner@suntimes.com October 26, 2011 6:30PM

Updated: October 27, 2011 5:50PM

Sometimes the best part of a GWAR concert is what happens outside the venue immediately after the show. Concertgoers — most of them absolutely drenched in blood — spill back onto city sidewalks, leaving bloody footprints and shrieking with . . . glee? Horror? it’s hard to tell. Bewildered citizens look on with confusion and concern. What horrors just happened in there? Should we call 911?

Nah, it’s only GWAR, America’s long-running, costumed, shock-rock gore-fest.

Once an annual staple of Halloween in Chicago, the notorious and theatrical death metal band revives the tradition this year with another holiday encampment at the House of Blues — complete with spewing bodily fluids, a giant foam-rubber maggot that devours “hot bitches” from the audience and the opportunity to watch a “Jersey Shore” star disemboweled live onstage.

“Halloween is the biggest night of the year for GWAR, despite our attempt to make every night of the year a festival of death,” said lead singer Dave Brockie.

Or that may have been his alter-ego speaking, the human-devouring alien Oderus Urungus. in our recent interview, he slipped back and forth between the two. “I’ve completely lost my mind at this point,” he said. “I’ve been living this extended multiple-personality existence so long.”

he just finished celebrating that long existence, as GWAR went on a world tour for its 25th anniversary, a tour that went on for two years.

“Oops, we forgot our 26th,” Brockie said.

Then Oderus came out. “I didn’t know we’d still be enjoying this awful little planet so much,” he said.

The GWAR backstory is that they’re aliens — Oderus describes himself as a “pathetic undying chaos demon from the core of space” — created from the worst filth in the universe, banished here and on a mission to either sexually enslave or simply slaughter human beings. “Enjoy” comes up again: “I didn’t know I’d enjoy inflicting suffering on you humans so much. You’re so gullible and easy to kill.”

Oderus is the one character common to all incarnations since GWAR was founded by collegiate comedians at a Virginia college in 1984. (The band’s name does not, surprisingly, stand for God What an awful Racket but is rather an abbreviation for the original act’s name: Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh!) The current lineup also includes Flattus Maximus (Cory Smoot, guitar), Balsac the Jaws of Death (Mike Derks, guitar), Beefcake the Mighty (Jamison Land, bass) and Jizmak Da Gusha (Brad Roberts, drums).

GWAR shows weave the scatological mythos into thudding heavy metal songs. in between, alien rituals are acted out, with fake blood and sexual fluids — washable, non-staining — liberally sprayed over, into and on the audience.

Turnabout is fair play. “Some fans threw cups of dog vomit on us one time in Norway,” Brockie recalled, chuckling. “That was pretty cool.”

Usually, a celebrity is sacrificed during the show. a few years ago, the band blipped on the nation’s pop cultural radar when vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin took a dislike to her likeness being disemboweled onstage. This year, the band is apolitical.

“We had a long debate about who to kill this year,” Brockie said. “I’m so disgusted in the lack of personality in the current candidates I refuse to even comment on it. so I figured, who in entertainment is the fattest, grossest symbol of how untalented and grotesque you can be and still be a huge star? so we’re carving the sh– out of Snooki.

“She’s a tacky, bulbous, ignorant symbol of everything that’s wrong with society today. plus, there’s lots of blood and guts inside her. We can carve away on her for a song or two before we even get to the spinal cord. We did Lady Gaga before, but she’s just skin and bones. she disintegrated halfway through a song.”

Oderus reflected on his favorite moments on Earth during the band’s 27 years here.

“Having sex with Joan Rivers,” he said. “The Grammys” — yes, GWAR has been nominated — “and losing twice. That was big. We played in East Berlin after your puny Berlin Wall was torn down. they rebuilt a section of it after our show.”

The next move for GWAR? to television, of course. The character of Oderus stars alongside pop-metal singer Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) in “Holliston,” an original sitcom premiering next spring on the FEARnet cable channel.

“It’s a cross between ‘It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia’ and ‘Evil Dead 2,’” Brockie said. “Oderus is this goofy supporting character, like Kramer from outer space.”

So who enjoys GWAR’s kind of entertainment, and pays for it?

“Stupid humans,” Oderus said. “Only on Earth could we storm into your concert halls, openly advertise that we will punish and slaughter you and feed you to the maggot, and you sheep just stampede through the door.”

He laughs ominously. “Come on down!”

Fall back or you might get put to work at church

Stakes high again for MHS against Cooper – Mywesttexas.com: Sports

AppId is over the quota

For Brandon Williams, the setting for this week is somewhatfamiliar.

As Midland High prepares to play Abilene Cooper at 7:30 p.m.today at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene, Williams knows the Bulldogsare once again in a high-pressure situation. But facing Cooper withsomething significant on the line is a familiar sight to MidlandHigh’s senior starting cornerback.

“They’re similar (situations),” Williams said about thecomparison between this season’s matchup with Cooper and lastyear’s. “But now we’re playing for more. We have to win. We want itand we want it real bad.”

The Bulldogs are in a dire situation as they enter the regularseason finale today, and unfortunately, do not completely holdtheir fate in their hands. to absolutely ensure the Bulldogs canmake the postseason they not only need to beat Cooper, but theyalso need crosstown rival Lee to get its first District 3-5Avictory of the season against Odessa High.

Even if the Bulldogs lose, they still can make it into thepostseason, but only if Lee defeats Odessa High by at least fivepoints. It’s a mathematical equation Midland High coach CraigYenzer would like to avoid even diving into.

“We’re not going to sit there and worry to much about what’sgoing on anywhere else,” Yenzer said. “We have business to takecare of. We have a job to do. We need to only worry about and takecare of what we can control and that’s coming out of Abilene with awin.”

The Bulldogs began the process of resurrecting their playoffhopes after pulling off a come-from-behind victory against Lee lastweek. They overcame a 12-point deficit in the final 5 minutes, 25seconds to win 45-35, greatly improving Midland High’s playoffchances.

“We’ve been talking about hope and (the win against Lee) justgave us that hope that we’re going to be playing for a while,”Williams said. “We’re going to succeed as long as we believe inwhat we’re trying to do.”

Last season against Abilene Cooper, the Bulldogs were playingfor a share of a District 3-5A title. They held on for a 42-35victory that gave them the first district title in school historysince the fabled 1988 season.

Williams made his first varsity start in that game, stepping infor starter Erick Callier, who had gotten sick the night before thegame and had a high fever. Williams stepped in admirably in apressure situation, playing a key part in the Bulldogs’victory.

He’s betting on the same result tonight.

“This year I’m just more confident. last year they just threw meon the spot and I had to just do what I could do,” Williams said.”This year I’m more confident in what I have to do and moreconfident in my team. I just know that we’re going to get itdone.”

There isn’t a district title waiting for the Bulldogs if theyget it done, though. This time around, their hoping their reward issimply a playoff spot.

Key injuries: Midland High, Kodie Ochoa (concussion –doubtful), LB Carson Carter (shoulder — out); Cooper, nonereported.

Weather forecast: Clear with a game-time temperature of 57degrees, dropping into the upper 50s into the night. no chance ofprecipitation.

Coach: Todd Moebes (6-3 in first year at Abilene Cooper and ashead coach)

Players to watch: QB Clayton Nicholas (6-3, 205, Sr.), DEGarrison Railsback (6-2, 225, Sr.), S Josh Bowman (6-1, 180, Sr.),OL Darrell Brown (6-5, 255, Sr.), RB Matt Watson (5-9, 170, Sr.),TE John Patrick (6-0, 185, Sr.); WR Lorenzo Joe (6-1, 170, So.)

What to expect on offense: Spread. The Cougars are the mostspread-heavy team Midland High has faced in district play. They’llbe in the spread on nearly every play. of the teams Midland Highhas faced this season, only San Angelo Central is comparable toCooper in the use of the spread offense.

The Cougars are also the most pass-heavy team in the district, and with good reason, since they do boast Texas Tech commit ClaytonNicholas at QB.

“Their offense starts with Nicholas. I saw all of him last yearthat I wanted to see,” Midland High coach Craig Yenzer said. “He’sa tremendous player. He’s had a great year and always seems to getthe ball to the right people. We can’t let him stand back there,he’ll pick you apart. We need to drop sometimes and then sometimescome after him.”

Nicholas is the all-time leading passer at Abilene Cooper with5,099 yards in his career to go with 49 TDs.

What to expect on defense: 3-4. Cooper lines up with three downlinemen and four linebackers on most plays. Yenzer said safety JoshBowman and defensive end Garrison Railsback are standouts on theCooper defense.

But Yenzer also notes a lack of size for the Cougars. In fact,Railsback is their biggest defender at 6-2, 225 pounds.

“It’s kind of a funny year for them because they’re not real bigon defense,” Yenzer said. “They aren’t going to be putting280-pound defensive tackles in front of you. But they’ve certainlygot a lot of quickness to make up for that.”

n As with just about every other coach heading into a gameagainst Midland High, Cooper coach Todd Moebes was impressed by thesize the Bulldogs boast all over the field.

“They’re huge and physical,” Moebes commented. “They’re going totry to dominate the line of scrimmage and have been able to do soin just about every game they’ve played. This is a good footballteam. They’re probably a couple plays here or there from flippingtheir record. They’re tough to defend and they’re tough to move theball against.”

n Echoing Thursday’s feature story on Midland High fullbacksDonavon Anders and Erik Pena, Moebes also had great praise for thatduo, noting how much they contribute to Midland High’s strongground game.

“They don’t formation you to death, but they don’t have to,”Moebes said. “They try to push the line of scrimmage. Not only dothey have a huge offensive line, but they have two kids at fullbackthat play great. (Jacoby) Webster is a strong running back anddoesn’t go down easily when he gets the ball.”

n The Cougars are coming off a rough 62-6 shelling by in-townrival Abilene High. In that game, the Cougars committed eightturnovers, including four interceptions thrown by ClaytonNicholas.

But regardless of that showing, Yenzer said he believes he’s notgoing to see Cooper play like that two weeks in a row.

“We’re going to see a much better Abilene Cooper team,” Yenzersaid. “We know they’re not going to play like that again. We’ll gettheir best shot.”

n Moebes is in his first year as the head coach of the Cougarsafter having spent the previous five years on staff as defensivecoordinator under his predecessor Mike Spradlin. But despite thecoaching change, Yenzer sees a very similar Cooper team.

“I’m sure there’s some things that Moebes does that Spradlindidn’t do, but that’s typical,” Yenzer said. “They look like thesame type of team to me. They run pretty much the same offense andthe defense is the same since he was the coordinator.”

n Should Midland High qualify for the postseason this weekend, the Bulldogs will play Arlington Martin in the bi-district round. While their opponent is figured out, the schematics of that playoffmatchup are still up in the air.

It all depends on who Abilene High will be playing. The Eagleswill face either Arlington High or Arlington Lamar in thebi-district round. if Abilene High plays Arlington Lamar, thenMidland High will meet Arlington Martin at 7:30 p.m. next Friday atShotwell Stadium in Abilene.

However, if the Eagles draw Arlington High instead, that gamewill be played at Shotwell Stadium on Friday, and the Bulldogs willface Martin at either 6 p.m. or 9 p.m. at Cowboys Stadium inArlington.

n Midland High has had plenty of recent success against AbileneCooper. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five games againstthe Cougars. The lone loss in that span came in 2006, 31-24.

The average score in that span is 33-23, but that differentialis somewhat skewed because of a 56-8 Midland High victory in 2005.Take out that game and the margin reduces to 28-27, showing howcompetitive these matchups have been in the last five meetingsbetween MHS and Cooper.

Next: Midland High vs. Arlington Martin, Class 5A Division Ibi-district playoff, Friday, Nov. 11, TBA; Abilene Cooper vs.Arlington High or Arlington Lamar, Class 5A Division II bi-districtplayoff, TBA.

Chemical Factors in Obesity Examined

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

It’s a growing epidemic—and the numbers are looking worse for the future. Over 80 percent of Americans are considered either overweight or obese by the Center for Disease Control. Yet a groundbreaking conference hosted at Colby Oct. 14 suggests there’s more to it than just diet and exercise. A new culprit contributing to this growing health concern: exposure to industrial chemicals, participating scientists say.the day-long conference, “Chemicals, Obesity and Diabetes: How Science Leads us to Action,” had more than 160 participants, including students, faculty, and visiting speakers considered experts in this dynamic field of environmental health. The conference emphasized that caloric intake and physical activity are only two of many complex factors that ultimately put individuals at risk for obesity, and researchers are looking for other factors. “Understanding cellular targets help us understand how weight and metabolism are regulated,” said Gail Carlson, visiting assistant professor of environmental studies. “We’re talking about industrial chemicals, many of which get out into the environment, and it’s important to remember that people are a part of the environment,” said Carlson, one the organizers of the conference. Recent advances in developmental biology and a better understanding of human development have helped researchers argue that chemicals they call “obesogens” can be an important factor in contributing to fat-related health conditions. “Obesogens stimulate the development of fat cells or the storage [capacity] of new cells,” said keynote speaker Bruce Blumberg, a developmental and cell biology researcher from University of California-Irvine. “They lead to permanent effects, and we need … to intervene early.” Blumberg’s provocative presentation noted that such chemicals could affect the longevity of future generations and that the impact of obesity can easily transcend an individual to ultimately affect his or her offspring. Fat tissues are actively involved with the production of hormones, and researchers have shown that exposure to industrial chemicals that mimic certain hormones can change the architecture of fat cells. this can lead to changes in one’s metabolism and may ultimately lead to obesity. Some of the conference discussions noted that these obesogens can begin to adversely affect a fetus’s development in the womb, potentially setting an individual on a path toward obesity even before birth. Therefore, “It isn’t just about personal choices,” Carlson said, “… there could be prenatal exposure,” and that exposure could increase the risk. The biological research discussed at the conference was balanced with an emphasis on policy considerations. Participants were eager to broaden the conversation to include prevention. Participants said that Maine is one of the more progressive states in terms of regulating harmful substances with public policy, so it was fitting that the College was host to a summit to explore obesity in America and around the world. The conference was sponsored by the Environmental Health Strategy Center, Colby’s Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, Colby’s Environmental Studies Program, and several state and regional medical institutions.

Jahvid Best misses practice amid talk he could sit out season

AP

Lions running back Jahvid Best is sitting out practice again today after suffering a concussion on Sunday. and he might miss a lot more than just practice.

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reports that people close to Best are urging him to consider sitting out the rest of the season over concerns that his concussion problems are not going away.

The concussion Best suffered on Sunday was his second of the 2011 season. and perhaps of greater concern is that Best suffered a very serious concussion at Cal, which forced him to miss the final four games of his college career.

For his part, Best suggested this week that he doesn’t know how long he’ll be out.

“As of right now I’m just taking it day by day,” he said.

The Lions’ attempt to trade for Ronnie Brown this week may be an indication that they’re concerned about Best’s health and want more depth at running back. after that trade was voided, the Lions don’t have many other places to turn if Best can’t go.

Weekend Entertaining: Square inch too small for this indulgent treat

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

I made Salted Caramel Brownies this weekend for my mother’s visit.

These are inspired by a Cooking Light recipe, but once I determined that the portion size the magazine had listed was a 1-by-1-inch square for the 180 calories, I decided I’d rather have the full-fat, bring-on-the-sugar version and really enjoy a larger square!

These are a once-in-a-while treat, not an everyday occurrence … well, at least until they’re gone.

If you are trying to watch your calorie and fat intake, you might want to make these for a crowd of eight or more so you know they will be gone when everyone leaves.

They are that good. the cayenne is very optional and not necessary, but allow the recipe to be changed up a bit every now and then.

Shelley Baltz received her culinary degree from Johnson & Wales University. See more from her at thewrittenkitchen.com or e-mail her at .

Spicy Salted Caramel Brownies

5 tbsp. melted margarine

2 eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

2/3 cup cocoa powder

1/2 tsp. baking powder

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)

Salted Caramel Topping:

4 tbsp. butter

3 tbsp. half-and-half

3 tbsp. brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

3/4 cup powdered sugar

2 tbsp. semisweet chocolate chips

1/4 tsp. canola oil

1/4 tsp. Maldon or flake salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-by-9 or 8-by-8 glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Mix together the melted margarine, eggs, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Stir in the cocoa powder, baking powder, flour and salt (and cayenne, if using). This is a really thick batter. Spread the batter into the dish and bake for 16-20 minutes or until the center gives a little but isn’t raw. cool completely.

For the salted caramel topping, bring the butter, half-and-half and brown sugar to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and powdered sugar. once the brownies are cool, pour on the caramel and spread evenly over the brownies. Melt the chocolate chips and canola oil in the microwave for 25-50 seconds or until melted and smooth. place the chocolate in a small zipper bag and snip a tiny piece of the corner of the bag, about the size of a pencil lead. Squeeze the chocolate out of the bag in a zigzag motion over the top of the caramel. Sprinkle the caramel and chocolate with the flake salt. allow to set for at least one hour before serving.

Option: If using the cayenne, add 1/4 tsp. cinnamon to the batter for a Mexican chocolate-type taste. Note: if you can’t find flake salt, use any coarse salt, but do not use table salt.

Yield: 9 large portions or 16 six-bite portions.

E-Mail

LOUISVILLE, KY - if Eibar COA is a big drama to victory in the 2010 breeders' Cup Sprint it was, surprise. If COA entering the paddock, big drama for the 2011 Sprint burdened with getting to see it was a miracle.

COA was scheduled back Saturday, less than nine months since he temporarily was paralyzed links from the neck down after breaking the C-4 vertebra in his neck in an accident riding, Gulfstream Park on 18 February his best time. the original prognosis of Côa doctors was poor, but he has beaten the odds and is on the way, what will he hopes of a full recovery.

"But I never hope abandoned." It took over a month to start and a half, some movement back, and after two months I was very confident that I can walk again.
